Homeowner Guide
How often should a dryer vent be cleaned?
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends cleaning lint from the dryer vent pipe once a year, or more often if clothes are taking longer than normal to dry.
Do not use the calendar as the only test
A household that does frequent laundry or has a difficult vent route can develop restrictions sooner than another home. Warning signs matter more than waiting for a specific anniversary date.
Schedule sooner if you notice
- Longer drying times
- Excess heat
- Burning or unusual odors
- Exterior vent not opening fully
- Bird or pest activity around the termination
- Airflow error messages
